This is the most common scheduling mistake I run into, and it is an easy one to make because the instinct behind it is sensible. People book a gutter cleaning in early fall, ahead of the weather, wanting to be ready. Then the leaves drop in the six weeks after and the gutters fill up anyway.

One cleaning a year belongs after leaf drop. Around here that generally means November, once the deciduous trees have finished. A gutter cleared in November goes into the wettest months of the year genuinely empty, which is the entire point. Cleared in September, it fills right back up before the heavy rain arrives, and you have paid for a service that ran out before you needed it.

Why the wet season is what matters. Gutters do not fail because they are dirty. They fail because water backs up, overflows behind the gutter, and gets into the fascia and soffit. That risk is concentrated in the months of sustained rain. Your cleaning should be timed so its useful life covers that window.

Conifers change the picture. Firs and cedars do not follow the same schedule as deciduous trees. They shed needles year round, with heavier periods in late summer and again in fall. If your house sits under conifers, one cleaning a year may genuinely not be enough, and needles are worse than leaves in one specific way: they pack down into a dense mat that water cannot pass through, and they slide into downspouts and lodge there.

When two cleanings make sense. Heavy tree cover, conifers directly overhead, a history of overflow, or a roof with a low pitch that does not shed debris well. In those cases a late-spring cleaning and a November cleaning is the pattern that actually keeps up.

Screens and guards do not remove the need. They change what accumulates. Fine debris and needles still get through and build up underneath, and screens have to come off to clean properly. If you have guards, tell me when you book so the job is quoted correctly, because it does add time.

What to watch for between cleanings. Water sheeting over the front edge during rain, streaking or staining down the fascia, plants growing in the gutter, and downspouts that stay silent in a storm when they should be running.
